A good filter keeps water clean and gives beneficial bacteria somewhere to live. For shrimp tanks, sponge filters are a popular choice because shrimplets cannot be sucked in and shrimp graze on the sponge. Larger or planted tanks may need a hang-on or canister filter such as OASE, SHIRUBA or Seachem Tidal. You will also find air pumps, air disks, surface skimmers and filter media such as Seachem Purigen and N30 Bio White Media here.
Our post Filtration System explains mechanical, biological and chemical filtration and how to choose a filter for your shrimp tank. Whatever filter you choose, rinse the media in tank water rather than tap water so you keep the beneficial bacteria.
